ICC Situations
Situation Name - Nerves of Steel
Difficulty Rating = 6 (ratings go from 1 easy to 6 nearly impossible)
Derbyshire require just 3 runs from the last over of the 2nd sunday league match of the 1998 season to be bowled by Chris Silverwood,
the centurion Michael May is on strike - let the last over commense.
How did this situation arise ?
Yorkshire put up a good score of just over 200 with a gritty century from Craig White who was promoted up the order to pitch hit at the top of the innings.
Then when defending this target Yorkshire started very well, Gough and Silverwood's 1st bowling spells of 3 overs costing just 9 runs, then the
wheels fell of the Yorkshire wagon as Michael May started to open up scoring very freely of the 2nd string bowlers (Hutchinson 3 overs for 24 runs, White 3 overs for 31).
The 2 spinners then came on to regain some control, Stemp's first 4 overs costing just 17 with 2 wickets. Vaughan slightly more expensive but did repair the most of the damage.
Gough came back to finnish his spell and 3 overs we expensive he did pick up 2 wickets and best of all 2 consecutive maidens at the end of his allotted overs to bring the
run rate required back from 1.8 to 2.7. Hutchinson bowled one wicket maiden to leave Chris Silverwood with the problem of bowling the last over against the possible Man of the Match - May.
Can Yorkshire have nerves of steel to come back from the dead with their fine bowling ?
This IS hard - Derby' need just one run every two balls and one boundary will seal it - Will you try and save the boundary ? - attack the batsman ? or stop the singles ?
